Arundel: 900 years of Maritime History
A COMMERCIAL MEDIEVAL RIVER PORT
Roman and Saxon river settlements existed at Arundel long before the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066. Arundel is five miles from the English Channel coast at Littlehampton and the River Arun is tidal to a mile further upstream. From the establishment of Arundel Castle in 1067, Roger de Montgomery gained income from the maritime trade serviced by the town wharves (portum aque) and ship dues (conuetudinem navium). A decade after William the Conqueror's death his son William II disembarked from his ship onto the Town Quay side at Arundel. Arundel became an active passenger port with cross Channel links to the main French Ports into the 13th Century. Arundel Port was commercially active until 19th Century. Arundel Castle is the ancestral home to the D uke of Norfolk family, England's oldest Dukedom and one of England's finest Stately homes; second only in size to the Royal Castle at Windsor. For 932 years this ancient Castle has stood overlooking the valley of the River Arun - England's second fastest flowing river.
