the horse - a photographic essay

Sarah grew up in the USA riding and drawing horses. 

She was inspired to perfect equine photography by her own horse, ‘Alibar’, whom she has owned for seventeen years.

Her thorough understanding of these beautiful creatures, gained through years of training for dressage and show jumping, enables Sarah to anticipate movement and perfectly capture their grace and passion in a photograph.

Sarah demonstrates her confidence and skill in photographing horses and riders in action across the gamut of the equine world.

“Through photography I strive to capture the passion and beauty of horse racing – and rock music! I see a lot of similar elements in the final strides of a horse race – and in the sweaty frenzy of an encore at a rock club.”

Maddie Thornhill brings a graphic eye to garden photography, using the lens and light to reveal the order and symmetry that governs plant life.

During her career with a number of leading London advertising agencies, initially as a copywriter and then later as an Art Director, she worked with some of the world’s foremost photographers.   She developed a photographer’s eye; that recognition of what works - and what does not.

Some seven years ago her passion for gardening prompted her to invest in a decent camera, tripod and set of lenses and to search out some stories with garden interest, with which to approach the editorial world.   Work came fast from such publications as ‘The Saturday’ and ‘Sunday Telegraph’, ‘The Times’, ‘Homes & Gardens’, ‘Gardens Illustrated’, ‘The English Garden’ and ‘Country Living’  magazines.

Maddie attributes her success to one simple message given quite early in her life: “Look. Look. Look and look again; and then start looking.”  

“That clear message switched a light on in my head, which continues to glow brighter, year upon year.   Its now become integrated within me, and lies at the very core of what I do”.

Karin established her design company and shop in Arundel in the 90’s retailing, promoting and teaching specialist interior painting effects.   The business has grown and Karin now consults for clients internationally providing full interior and garden design services including the sourcing of fine art, trompe l’oeil, mosaics, bespoke furniture, soft furnishings and integrated planting schemes.

Karin has a bachelor of arts Degree in Art and Design with a post-graduate qualification in communication skills; her practical approach to design has developed from experience and ability to interpret a client’s brief and artistically inter-links aspects into a harmonious scheme.

Karin works from studios in Arundel, France and Mallorca. She has exhibited this year new trompe l’oeil work at the Victoria and Albert Museum and has been commissioned for large murals in Dubai.  

Karin is available as a consultant and to engage on commissions.
